Socket Sets
Socket Sets
Sockets are a mechanic's best friend! Made from hard-wearing steel, socket sets are put to work whenever you need to work on your car. Socket sets are available in a large selection of sizes, types and from top trade brands. A socket is a tool that attaches to a socket wrench, ratchet, torque wrench or other turning tool in order to tighten or loosen a fastener. There are two different types of sockets available
- Hex Sockets (6 point sockets)
- This is the most common type of socket with a square drive at one end to attach to a ratchet. The other end has a bi-hex or hex recessed socket head for turning your bolts and nuts.
- Socket Bits
- A socket bit is a combination of a screwdriver bit and a hex socket that connects to a ratchet. The other end fits into the female recess of your fastener. Impact sockets give a better torque than ordinary wrenches and drivers.
Whether you're replacing the battery, stripping down the engine or changing a lightbulb, a decent socket set is essential.
Identify a socket
Sockets have a recessed square at one end (drive socket) that is used to connect the socket to a wrench or other turning tool. The end is being turned by the tool. Furthermore, the other end is called the head and comes in a number of different shapes. The shape depends on what type and size of fastener it is designed for. The most common shape is a hexagon, sockets with these are usually referred to as hex sockets or 6 point sockets.
Many of our socket sets come with spanner sets and a whole range of other attachments including impact sockets, spark plug sockets, hex sockets and universal joint sockets. Eventually, you will need them all!
