Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the shelf life of clear varnish?

How long clear varnish stays good depends on how you store it. An unopened can and spray can of clear varnish stays good for years.

What is clear coat?

Clear coat is a transparent lacquer that you apply over a colour lacquer. This makes a clear coat the same as a varnish that protects the colour lacquer from scratches, discolouration by sunlight, impacts, weather, salt and more.

How do you apply clear coat?

Clear coat is applied with a spray can or a paint sprayer. There are several ways to apply clear coat. If you apply clear coat, make sure you apply at least 2 layers.

What is the difference between clear coat and transparent?

There is no difference between clear coat and transparent. A clear coat is transparent, which is why this varnish is also called a transparent varnish.

How many layers of clear coat should I apply?

Applying 2 layers of clear coat is enough to have enough layer thickness. Do you want the clear coat to have more ‘body’? Then apply another coat of clear coat.

Nice result, full gloss, very satisfied
Last weekend I painted my aluminum rims with a very nice result. The clear coat over the color paint (rim gray) gives the end result a slightly higher and fuller color. Definitely a recommendation. The lacquer can gives a nice spray flow, does have some tendency to sag, more than the primer and color paint, so do pay attention. Deprimer and paint sag very little so you get overconfident. Got rid of a few sags with "rocking/turning". Also covered the deeper nooks and crannies nicely without sagging. Quick drying and repaintable with clear coat after 1 to 2 hours. The recommendation is to shake for 10 minutes before use, which nobody does. So with a total of 8 cans of paint you are shaking for 80 minutes, even in my youth I did not keep that up :-). 1 minute of shaking per can appears to be sufficient.
When the can is almost empty, the flow decreases and the nozzle may splatter a bit. It is difficult to search/find the instructions for use on the site. The information on the can is too small to read and gives little practical information. I did not sand before applying the clear coat because I expect the clear coat to adhere to the fresh paint.
For 4 single rims without tires of 18inch 8J (yucky), the front and back, I used 3 cans of primer, 3 cans of paint and 2 cans of clearcoat. Also used 24 thin scouring pads grid 220 in a cement tub with St Mark. Now I (temporarily) have no fingerprints after 7 hours of sanding and my pinks are through.
