Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the shelf life of clear varnish?

How long clear varnish stays good depends on how you store it. An unopened can and spray can of clear varnish stays good for years.

What is clear varnish?

Clear varnish is a transparent varnish that you apply over a colour varnish. Because of this, clear lacquer is the same as a varnish that protects the colour lacquer against scratches, discolouration caused by sunlight, impacts, weather, salt and more.

How do you apply clear varnish?

Clear varnish is applied with a spray can or a paint sprayer. There are several ways to apply clear coat. If you apply clear varnish, make sure you apply at least 2 layers.

Which varnish is best?

Which varnish is best is determined by the user. For a plain uni colour, a 2K lacquer is best. If the colour lacquer is metallic or pearlescent, a 1K lacquer is best.

How many coats of clearcoat should I apply?

Applying 2 coats of clearcoat is enough to have enough layer thickness. Do you want the clear coat to have more ‘body’? Then apply another layer of clear coat.

How much time between coats of clear coat?

5 minutes time between coats of clear coat is sufficient. By keeping a time of 5 minutes between coats of clear coat, the varnish has enough time to evaporate.

What is the difference between clear varnish and coloured varnish?

The difference between clear varnish and colour varnish is that you spray a clear varnish as a varnish over the colour varnish. A clear varnish is transparent and a coloured varnish contains pigments that give the paint colour.

Why use tinted clear varnish?

Why use a tin of clear lacquer is because you can then use the transparent lacquer with your paint sprayer. You pour a can of clear lacquer into the paint sprayer and then spray it. Reasons to use canned clearcoat is because the yield is higher and you can spray more tightly.
