It is a very easy to use instrument made of durable plastic, with a stainless steel orifice, for measuring the consistency of paints, varnishes and similar products. The measured kinematic viscosity is generally expressed in seconds (s) flow time.

The process of flow through an orifice can often be used as a relative measurement and classification of viscosity.
